Mark Zuckerberg Launches A Podcast

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has launched a new podcast called “Tech and Society.” The podcast is currently available on Spotify. For the podcast, Zuckerberg conducts conversations on the future of technology and society.

Currently, there are three podcast episodes available featuring discussions with Yuval Noah Harari, Mathias Döpfner of Axel Springer and Harvard professor Jonathan Zittrain. Each of the conversations is more than an hour.

Going forward, Zuckerberg is going to release a new episode every few weeks according to Engadget.

First Quarter Earnings

This past week, Facebook announced its first-quarter earnings. And Wall Street was impressed with Facebook’s revenue and growth. The company also topped estimates in terms of monthly active users and the average revenue per user.  However, the company’s profit saw a hit due to an expected fine of at least $3 billion from the Federal Trade Commission due to privacy violations.

"We had a good quarter and our business and community continue to grow," said Zuckerberg in a statement. "We are focused on building out our privacy-focused vision for the future of social networking, and working collaboratively to address important issues around the internet."

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said that the feed ads on Facebook and Instagram still generate most of the revenue for the company’s ad business, but Stories Ads are becoming “increasingly important.” There are now three million advertisers signed up for Stories Ads on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. And there are more than 500 million daily active users that are engaging with Stories across the three apps.

Facebook’s daily active users (DAUs) were 1.56 billion on average for March 2019 and monthly active users (MAUs) were 2.38 billion. As of the end of the first quarter of 2019, the company’s cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities were $45.24 billion.

And Facebook estimates that more than 2.1 billion people use Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or Messenger every day on average. Plus at least 2.7 billion people use at least one of the Family of services every month.

For the quarter, Facebook saw $14.9 billion in ad revenue — which is up 26% compared to the same period last year. And mobile ad revenue was 93% of the total ad revenue, an increase of 30% compared to the same period last year.

Jennifer Newstead Hires As General Counsel

On Monday, Facebook announced it hired Jennifer Newstead as general counsel and John Pinette as VP of communications.

Previously, Newstead was the legal adviser to the U.S. State Department. Newstead is succeeding Colin Stretch, who announced last year that he was planning to leave, but is going to stay through the summer to help with the transition.

“I’m excited to be joining Facebook at an important time and working with such a fantastic team,” said Newstead in a statement. “Facebook’s products play an important role in societies around the world. I am looking forward to working with the team and outside experts and regulators on a range of legal issues as we seek to uphold our responsibilities and shared values.”

And Pinette is succeeding Caryn Marooney. Previously, Pinette was the VP of marketing and communications at Vulcan — which is a technology and business organization established by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

“John’s deep understanding of the technology industry and his experience leading communications teams will be invaluable to helping us communicate the work we do at Facebook every day,” added Sandberg. “We are also thankful to Caryn for her exceptional contribution to Facebook over the past eight years. She has been an inspiring and thoughtful leader to our communications team and countless others at the company. Both she and Colin will be greatly missed.”

New Quiz Sticker For Multiple Choice Questions

Instagram has added a new quiz sticker for asking multiple choice questions through Stories. This feature appears to work similarly to the way that polls work in Instagram Stories.

“Starting today, you can use the new quiz sticker in Stories to ask your friends and followers a multiple-choice question. See how well your friends know you,” said Instagram in a tweet earlier this week.

If you want to use the Instagram quiz sticker, then you can find it in the sticker tray and by selecting “quiz.” Then create a question and add options. After you post the quiz, it gets added to the Instagram Story.

Reddit

Events And Collections

Reddit has rolled out events and collections to its platform. These features were rolled out following a limited beta that started back in September.

Events posts with time and date metadata associated with them. Events bring awareness about upcoming events in your community that users can follow to get a reminder about when they start.

And Collections are mod-curated groups of posts. The collections make it simple to put together related content in one place so that users can quickly navigate between other posts in the collection. Plus users can also follow the collection in order to get notifications when new posts are added.

In the announcement post, Reddit also revealed a new beta test involving scheduling. As part of the beta, you can schedule when to submit your post and setup recurring posts (beta starting soon). And all of the posts will be editable by anyone on your team until it is submitted.

Slack

New Features

At Slack’s Frontiers event, the company announced four new features. This includes a bridge between email and Slack, which allows users to send and receive messages to anyone within their company even if they are not yet on Slack (rolling out in a few months). Slack also announced a Workflow Builder, a tool that makes it easier to automate routine tasks and bring more work into Slack without having to write code (closed pilot and launching later this year). A new navigation and search interface that creates a unified destination and jumping off point for moving around in Slack. And after a successful Shared Channels beta program, the company has also now made it available for anyone in Slack to use.

Financial Results

As Slack prepares to go public, the company disclosed its numbers in the offering prospectus. The company hit $400.6 million in revenue over the last year that ended January 31. This is nearly double what the company generated in the previous fiscal year. And the company now has 88,000 paying customers.

The company saw a $140.7 million loss in the latest fiscal year. But these losses are lower than the $180.9 million during the same period a year earlier on revenues of $220.5 million.

Over 600,000 organizations in more than 150 countries use Slack to communicate and collaborate. And the company is used by more than 10 million people at those organizations.

Snap

Snapchat Sees Growth In Users

Snap recently announced its quarterly results and the company said Snapchat has started growing its users again after a long decline. Now Snapchat has 190 million daily active users — which is up from 186 million in the last quarter.

And Snap also saw a major improvement in the financials. The company reported better than expected results at $320 million in revenue, which is an increase of 39% during the same time last year. But Snap is still far from profitable.

"As of March, our ads can now reach more 13 to 34 year-olds than Instagram in the United States," said Snap CEO Evan Spiegel in a statement via CNN.

The company also grew substantially outside of the U.S. and Europe. In the past quarter, Snapchat added 2 million new users outside of North America and Europe.

Twitter

CEO Jack Dorsey Meets President Trump

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recently met with President Trump to reportedly discuss the “health of the public conversation on Twitter,” according to Motherboard. And Dorsey confirmed in a tweet that one of the talking points was making Twitter healthier and more civil.

“Twitter is here to serve the entire public conversation, and we intend to make it healthier and more civil,” wrote Dorsey in a tweet thanking President Trump. “Thanks for the discussion about that.”

According to The Washington Post, President Trump reportedly complained about Twitter removing and limiting some of his followers. In previous tweets, President Trump said that Twitter is “very discriminatory” towards him.
