WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) – The University of the Cumberlands is the first in the state to offer a graduate degree in blockchain technology.
By the summer, students will be able to be part of the Master of Science in Global Business with Blockchain Technology (MS-Blockchain) program.
“The technical definition is that it is a distributive ledger technology. What that simply means is it is a way a tracking any type of an item or any type of a transaction. Whether that is a car title or that’s produce that Wal-Mart is shipping out to all of their stores,” says Lois McWhorter, Chair of the Hutton School of Business.
School officials say the program will bridge the gap between I.T. and business, and LinkedIn said blockchain was the number one emerging job of 2018.
“The university was recognized as a center for academic excellence by the Department of Homeland Security. This degree is very much in keeping with that,” says Christopher Leskiw, Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Officials say they are excited to be a part of the innovation of blockchain technology and bringing it to their students.
“University of the Cumberlands is on the cutting edge and that we are constantly looking for degrees that will employee people. That will make people more employable in anywhere that they are,” says McWhorter.
The classes are now open for students to register and classes will begin this summer.
The courses are offered both in-seat and online.
