Nuclear power, Big Data, genetic engineering: So the experts think – view

Effy Vayena, a Professor of bioethics at the ETH Zürich

There are many health-relevant data, but they are scattered very much. In addition to the medical record, there are also those, which are collected by Smartphone Apps and Fitness trackers. The research could benefit but cannot access in.

We have a privacy Paradox. We are pretty careless with our data. Most of us use Apps on the Smartphone and make their data groups available to them for their own purposes. But when it comes to health data for research, we will be suspicious. Since it needs a rethink.

the Smartphone data can provide clues to our health. Especially if you are connected to clinical data. The access to these combined data sets is important for the research to understand diseases such as Diabetes or Depression better. From this new Knowledge, patients can benefit directly.

What I miss, is the dialogue with the Public. Politicians should respond to the concerns of the population, but also on the common goals of talk: How do we want to bring the research and the progress in Switzerland?

Horst-Michael Prasser, Professor for nuclear energy systems at ETH Zürich

no, no nuclear energy, no way around global. You can wear eco-friendly for a large proportion of the base load for the power supply, the strength of her great. Per kilowatt hour is similar to little CO2, as in the case of hydropower and wind energy.

at The thought of Chernobyl and Fukushima, many are overcome by a queasy feeling. I can understand that. But the safety of nuclear power plants, the existing plants, is continuously improved. You have to be aware of: No technology is without risk. What many lack, however, is a feeling for the risks of a one-sided to Renewable-based energy strategy.

in my estimation, renewable energies are not able to carry the total load of electricity consumption. The Problem of energy storage is massively underestimated, also because new environmental problems occur. For example, the extraction of raw materials for batteries.

For the final disposal of nuclear waste is a good solution. The Rock in which the Swiss deep geological repository is to be created, binds the most dangerous components of long-term, so that they disintegrate before they reach the Ecosystem. Here, too, is often argued rational: deep storage for other chemical wastes that are toxic, are not accepted in society a long time ago, although, these toxins will disintegrate with time.

A result of open, scientific debate. I have the impression that when it comes to nuclear power, is too often argued, only a political – many of the facts remain on the track.

Bruno Studer, Professor for molecular plant breeding at the ETH Zürich

It opens up possibilities for innovations in plant breeding to bring forth, to bring new features faster to the field, and to make a contribution to sustainable food production. Genome Editing is particularly plants for which growers are particularly difficult to.

this statement is no natural fit for scientific representation. Scientifically I would say that since 23 years, in the meantime 191,7 million acres in more than 26 countries, 17 million farmers use genetically modified crops to be cultivated. Of the expressed risk scenarios that are specifically attributable to genetic engineering has proved to be none.

in the longer term we will not have compared with other countries the same opportunities and tools available to the major challenges in the agriculture and food sector to address. A strategy, which we should consider in the face of climate change and the growing social pressure for reduced use of plant protection products well.

The social and political framework conditions must be designed in dialogue with all Stakeholders. It is important that the regulation is adapted to the progress of technology, and both opportunities and risks are equally taken into account.

That is not fear, but facts are the basis for dealing with new breeding methods and genomes-form Editing. In addition, I of the policy desires the courage, even such controversial topics and, in terms of sustainability. How quickly the mood in favour of scientifically-based facts can change, shows the current “Fridays for Future”movement is impressive.
