Big Data: Turtles in danger



217: That’s how many of the world’s 356 known species of turtle are either threatened or already extinct, according to new research. The creatures, which have been on the earth for more than 200 million years and outlived the dinosaurs, are now threatened by a familiar constellation of factors: habitat destruction, overexploitation for pets and food, and climate change. There are wider implications of the decline. “Turtles contribute to the health of many environments, including desert, wetland, freshwater and marine ecosystems,” said lead researcher Jeffrey Lovich, a US Geological Survey scientist. “And their decline may lead to negative effects on other species, including humans, that may not be immediately apparent.”
